INTER HOUSE ATHLETICS

The annual Inter House Sports Day is the highlight on our school calendar. The four school teams - Falcons, Hawks, Eagles and Kestrels - compete in a most festive manner for our most desired trophy.

This event is also the warm-up to our Winter Athletics season where we compete in the Inter School 'B' league and more often than not, hold our own against schools with superior numbers. Athletics gets high profile during the third term as most of our other sports are restricted to the warmer months of the year. Judging by the high turnout of enthusiastic participants each season, it is a much-loved sporting occasion at Fairways.

Our Sports Day on the 13 of August was a great success and it definitely was a lot of fun.

There was a lot of support from the families of both the athletes and non-athletes, and we were privileged to enjoy a visit from past pupils of Fairways Primary.

As we all know, there can only be one house which will be the winner, but the children showed great enthusiasm and spirit.

The "Gentleman's Game" is alive and well at Fairways Primary School.

We at Fairways are committed to providing excellent coaching and providing cricket on a very broad basis. We field 3 teams in each of the Commonwealth and Ter Horst age groups and our A and B teams play in the North-East Area while our C team plays in the Far North Area. We also have two Mini-Cricket teams who fare very well against much larger schools.

Ter Horst "A" team  - first match of the season, looking very confident!

This season our boys have once again played some very good cricket against much larger schools. Our commonwealth B and Terhorst B teams have had a mixture of results but their enthusiasm and dedication to the their team cannot be questioned. Our A teams have had a great season and a special mention must go out to our Terhorst boys who have only lost one game the whole season. Some of their victories came against schools such as the Ridge and Pridwin. Our results bear testimony to the excellent standard of cricket being played and our success on the field is reinforced by our representation at Area level. We have in the past provided area teams with many talented players and at the moment have nine members in the squad of 16 in the North-East area side. Our cricket will commence once again in the fourth term. Thank you to all the coaches of the various teams for making this season a success.

SENIOR TENNIS

FIRST TERM 2008

Our tennis is off to a very promising start.

The enthusiasm of our great new coach, Mark, is having the desired effect. Many beginners have started - working side by side with our seasoned players. We look forward to a successful season with our boy's senior team.

MINI-TENNIS TERM 1 2008

Ball skills are taught mainly through the medium of Mini-Tennis with a step-by-step approach that encourages a natural 'flair' and 'feel' for ball handling. The programme is designed to eliminate tension and to let the children play the ball as often as possible, allowing them to make mistakes, but encouraging performance. This approach accelerates progress.

A good mini-tennis programme will develop good hand/eye co-ordination and a skilled mini-tennis player will easily adapt to tennis and other ball sports.

Our new staff member and Mini-Tennis coach, Miss J Arnold is in charge of teaching these basic skills. This fun activity takes place on Thursdays from 13.30 to 14.15
