Mini City Council
Councillors Riley Freeman and Maxine Gussenhoven with Principal Miss T Rae our councillors for 2010
Fairways is associated with the Mini City Council and our two democratically elected councillors involve all learners in bringing awareness to them of charity and community needs. Two of the major events are the Easter egg collection and blanket square collection.
We look forward to hearing about the many exciting and worthwhile events which will take place during the course of 2010.

2010 Mini-City Councillors
When we, Maxine Gussenhoven and Riley Freeman were in Grade 6 in 2009, we were chosen along with five other children in our grade to attend a prefect's dinner at the HOD Hall where we met the current city councillors as well as other new candidates.
We listened to speeches from the executive committee and from special guest speakers including former Isidingo actor, Lesego Motsepe. The build up was very exciting but we were all very nervous, thinking about who would become the mini city councillors for Fairways in 2010!
About two weeks later, the seven of us who had attended the dinner, were called into Miss Rae's office where we were told who the two councillors were - Maxine and Riley.
Our first council meeting, which included our parents, was very formal and we were introduced to all aspects of council. Two weeks later, we had our first Mix 'n Meet, again at Fairways. Mix 'n Meets are where we get to know the other councillors and play some fun and usually educational games. Our first task was to sell tickets for a show at the Barnyard Theatre at Cresta called "Rocking All Over The World" and the funds raised went to charity. We really enjoyed the concert and the music was awesome.
The next event was another Mix 'n Meet where we had to pack all the sweets that we had collected for CHOC, a children's cancer foundation. Next we had the CHOC Christmas party at the Johannesburg General Hospital where there were excellent singers and dancers and we had lots of fun with the kids.
We then also had a Christmas party for the elderly, underprivileged people from WE CARE which is an organisation that helps people who do not have enough money to survive on their own. It was similar to the CHOC party and it was fun, especially for the elderly people who attended. They danced the day away!
After the December holidays we had another Mix 'n Meet at Fairways and it was awesome to see our council friends after such a long time. At the end of January we went to the Johannesburg Zoo where we had a day and night tour and we slept over as well. We really got to know the other councillors and some of us stayed awake the whole night and most of us got up at 05:15 in the morning!!!! It was really cool and so good for us to have that experience.
Then, on Valentine's Day: the two of us, along with friends, went to the Valentine's Hip Hop Party at Fairways. We were taught a great Hip Hop dance, saw our council friends and their friends and had some delicious food.
This weekend from the 19th to the 21st February we will be leaving for Camp David in Magaliesberg. There, we will be learning a lot about the councillors' strengths and weaknesses and getting into our committees. It will definitely be one of the highlights of the year.
We have really enjoyed council so far and it's been amazing having such an experience, meeting so many new people and learning so much from what we've done at council.
We will soon update you on how Camp David went and on any other future council events later in the year.Maxine and Riley
