Jewish Studies

The Jewish Studies Department was introduced at Fairways Primary School in 1996. At present we have 98 pupils enrolled in this programme comprising children from Grades 1 - 7. Jewish Studies is offered to all pupils of the school. The Jewish Studies syllabus covers 2 major subjects, one being Hebrew Language which includes reading, writing and oral Hebrew. The other subject is Judaica which covers the Jewish Holidays and Customs, Prayer, Bible Studies (Torah) and History of Israel.

The Sabbath and its customs form an integral part of our syllabus.

The major festivals are celebrated at school in a practical and colourful way so as to give them meaning and relevance. On Purim, the children dress up in fancy dress and enact the Purim story. On Passover (Pesach) we hold a mini Seder with the traditional songs and foods. On Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) the children eat apple and honey which signifies a sweet New Year. On Channukah (the Festival of Lights) we hold our year-end Channukah concert. The children enjoy doughnuts and receive spinning tops (sevivonim) as gifts.

Parents are always invited to attend these functions which are held in the Media Centre. By the time the children reach the senior level they are ready to undertake their Barmitzvah or Batmitzvah preparation. Some of our pupils continue with the Jewish Studies at one of the Jewish Day Schools. In the Jewish Studies Programme we aim to instil in our children a knowledge, love and appreciation of their Jewish heritage and culture.
